(How to design and build a solar swimming pool heater)

Imagine! Your own solar pool heater... to have you enjoy your swimming pool, or outdoor spa... all year round! Or most of the year at least, depending on where you live... for under US$100!

If an 11 year old boy can build one then anyone can.

Your swimming pool is a big (and expensive) investment — so why use it for only 12 weeks a year? By building your own low cost solar heating for $100, you'll find that swimming in April & October is a pleasant experience. Ever wondered about swimming under the stars at night? Or swimming before breakfast early in the morning? Well now you can.

Your kids will love the extended fun.

Build a Solar Pool Heater

You need a solar pool heater to ensure your home swimming pool remains your great family playground all year round. Building one yourself is easier and (much) cheaper than you think.

Even in warmer climates there are times of the year where cool nights lower the water temperature below comfort levels.

Extend your pool or spa use into evenings and colder months. In the "winter months", many outdoor pools just sit there - unused. It still gets up to 25C in the day but night temperatures of 5C-8C cool the water down too much to enjoy it.

But with your DIY solar pool heater you can still enjoy your dip in beautiful warm water, or a relaxing time in your steaming outdoor spa as long as skies are clear enough to get some sun.

Aaahhh, you feel like a winner in your solar heater swimming pool. Especially as anyone can assemble this solar pool heater with little cost.

Construction costs are approximately $100 to $150 for the panel and between $30 and $60 for a circulation pump. Prices tend to vary from one country to the next but most fall within this range.

A typical circulation pump uses only 15 to 20 watts of power saving you dollars and using only a tiny amount of precious resources. If a solar powered pump is used then no mains electricity is required at all.

Overview

pool heatersOur solar pool heater will raise pool or spa water temperatures during the shoulder periods of spring and autumn adding months of use to your investment.

Proportions can easily be varied to suite particular locations or applications. Each standard solar pool heater panel has 12 heating elements but extra elements or multiple solar pool heater panels can be used for increased efficiency or to service larger pools. As a rough rule of thumb one standard sized panel is effective on pools up to 30,000 litres (6000 gal) capacity.

There is no reason why a standard sized panel can't be used to heat a 2000 litre (400 gal) spa, in fact this would warm the water nicely, possibly too much in high summer. Multiple panels can be used for increased efficiency or to service larger pools. The solar pool heater panels can be mounted vertically on fences or horizontally on a roof (this is especially useful if the pool area is well shaded). Should space around the pool or spa be at a premium then each panel can be made in segments to fit.
